Mitchell explores how politics, technology, and global trends shape New York City.

Mitchell is the Henry Hart Rice Professor of Urban Policy and Planning and Director of the Rudin Center at NYU’s Wagner School for Public Service.

He served as advisor to Michael Bloomberg during his first campaign for mayor in 2001. From 1988 to 2003, he was Director of NYU’s Taub Urban Research Center and from 1983 to 2004, he was deputy to John Brademas, Chairman of the Governor's Council on Fiscal and Economic Priorities. From 2010 to 2022, Mitchell Moss was Director of the Rudin Center for Transportation at New York University.

Mitchell has directed research projects for the National Science Foundation, National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, and U.S. Department of Homeland Security,  Port Authority of New York & New Jersey, New York State Urban Development Corporation, Charles H. Revson Foundation and City of New York. He speaks to private corporations, professional organizations, and civic groups around the world.

His op-eds have appeared in The New York Times, San Francisco Chronicle, New York Post, The New York Observer, and Politico.com, as well as in leading scholarly journals. He has served on the Board of the Citizens Union of New York and the Steering Committee of the Association for a Better New York. He was named an honorary member of The New York State Chapter of the American Institute of Architects. In 2021, City & State New York honored Mitchell as one of its Higher Education Power 50, a ranked list of top higher education leaders across the state. Mitchell received the Lewis P. Rudin Award for Excellence in Service to New York City at NYU's Commencement in May 2022.
