RESEARCH: The proposed legalization of recreational cannabis in the State of New York provides an opportunity to maintain current subway, bus and commuter rail fares—on a temporary basis—for a one year time period. This NYU Rudin Center report analyzes how potential cannabis revenues can be used to maintain current fares, thus relieving the burden on families and workers who depend on public transit for access to work, school, and health care. RESEARCH: After conducting a study of influenza transmission in public transit environments spanning 121 U.S. cities, researchers at NYU’s Wagner School for Public Service and the Rudin Center for Transportation found no evidence of a positive relationship between city-level transit ridership and influenza/pneumonia mortality rates, suggesting that population level rates of transit use are not a singularly important factor in the transmission of influenza. This finding was highlighted by Bloomberg Radio, Curbed, FOX 5 NY, Gothamist, and WNYC News.
